India-China Border Dispute: Disengagement Near Completion
India and China have made substantial headway in settling their border issue, with disengagement efforts at Depsang and Demchok nearly complete.
This is a significant breakthrough in a long-standing deadlock caused by Chinese intrusions in 2020. The restoration of patrolling powers is a critical step towards lowering tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
Earlier this week, India announced an agreement with China concerning patrolling along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, signalling a major advancement in the border situation. Following this announcement, both countries began the process of withdrawing troops from the two key tension points in eastern Ladakh.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Sunday that the troop withdrawal at Depsang and Demchok symbolises the first phase of this process, with hopes for India to return to its 2020 patrolling status.
In addition, the next step is de-escalation, which will only occur when India is convinced that similar actions are being taken on the other side, as the External Affairs Minister added.
